12/20 PW Morning Report: Royal Rumble Entrants Announced, NXT Preview, AJ Lee Producing TV Show & More

Posted on September 22, 2021

Welcome to the PW Morning Report for December 20th, 2017. While I’m feeling much better the whole strep throat thing is still trying to kill me, so there will be no radio show again this morning.

We’ve got NXT on the WWE Network today with a few huge championship matches in a show I’ve heard was very, very good from those in attendance at the tapings. There’s also the final qualifying match between Roderick Strong and Lars Sullivan, with the winner filling the last spot in a huge four-way match to crown a challenger for NXT Takeover: Philadelphia.

– Tuesday night featured the first episode of Smackdown Live following a pretty good WWE Clash of Champions pay-per-view this past weekend. The show was expected to be filled with news, after most of the major title programs were played off at the PPV and new contenders were supposed to be named, but it turned out to be something of a throw-away episode. Full results.

– Following his incredible Intercontinental Championship run, and a jump from Smackdown Live to Monday Night Raw, The Miz was shockingly named Wrestler of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine for 2017. Yes, seriously. The Miz has wrapped shooting for the latest WWE Studios “Marine” movie and should be back on television soon, although it’s possible they could wait until the Royal Rumble for added effect.

– WWE wrote Dean Ambrose off television this Monday on Raw, when he was brutally attacked by Samoa Joe and The Bar. Everyone originally thought it was just an angle based on their never-ending rivalry, but as it turns out the “Lunatic Fringe” is actually suffering from an injury and will require surgery. Here’s the latest on the situation.

– After the blockbuster announcement that WWE will hold its first ever Women’s Royal Rumble match this January, rumors have been swirling about UFC icon Ronda Rousey possibly making her debut. We’ve got the latest on backstage conversations over Rousey, potential plans for WrestleMania and more.

In a bit of unexpected news, former WWE star AJ “Lee” Mendez has signed on as Executive Producer and writer for a television series based on her new book, “Crazy is my Super Power”. The book is an autobiography chronicling her early life and journey to becoming one of the biggest female WWE stars of her era (full details).
