According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the originally planned main event of G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden this April was for Kenny Omega to face Kazuchika Okada in a rematch from their iconic series that culminated in a “seven star” match at last year’s NJPW Dominion.
It’s unknown whether or not those plans had Omega winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship back from Hiroshi Tanahashi, which would have had to take place this past Monday at The New Beginning in Osaka, where Jay White instead defeated Tanahashi to become champion.

That also may indicate what the current plans are, as it’s been reported that Jay White has essentially been given Omega’s booking as Gedo, the head booker for New Japan, apparently books up to three years in advance.
As announced, White will defend the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in the main event of G1 Supercard against the winner of this year’s New Japan Cup, a single elimination tournament that kicks off next month. Okada is considered a front-runner to win, but with Kota Ibushi competing and options like Tanahashi and Tetsuya Naito on the table, anything is possible.
