The Mets, all too familiar with Mother Nature impacting their schedule, were dealt their eighth postponement of the season Tuesday.
The second game of the three-game series between the Mets and Cardinals was postponed Tuesday due to inclement weather. The game was rescheduled as a doubleheader on Wednesday, with first pitch at 5:15 p.m. ET.
Marcus Stroman will pitch Game 1 and the Mets are still undecided on who their starter will be for Game 2. Right-hander Jordan Yamamoto was called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday and is an option to start the second game.
With how turbulent these past 24 hours have been for the Mets, considering the late Monday night firings of hitting coaches Chili Davis and Tom Slater and Jacob deGrom’s sudden inflammation in his right lat, having Tuesday off due to the rain postponement was opportune timing.
Mets manager Luis Rojas didn’t come right out and state that he’s thankful the players got a night to digest the dismissals of two popular and beloved coaches, consider deGrom being scratched from his Tuesday night start and recompose from those two events.
But a melancholy Rojas admitted the day had been tough for the team.
“Last night with the events of losing two good coaches here, it was definitely tough,” Rojas said. “Then today we learned the news that Jake wasn’t going to go. It’s challenges, adversities; baseball is full of it. We met and talked as a family, and we acknowledged the situations that come our way. What we do best is shift and move forward. We got a game to play.”
