Schweinsteiger backed for Bayern director's role by Robben

The midfielder returned to the Allianz Arena for his testimonial match on Tuesday and an old team-mate feels the German has more to offer

Arjen Robben feels former team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger would be an excellent Bayern Munich director should he want a future role at his old club.

Schweinsteiger returned to Bavaria for his testimonial on Tuesday when his current team the Chicago Fire faced Bayern in a contest that the German side won 4-0.

At 34, Schweinsteiger is coming to the end of a decorated career and Robben believes he could still offer a lot to Bayern after retiring.

Schweinsteiger spent 17 years with Bayern, having joined the academy aged 13, and the likes of Hasan Salihamidzic, Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have all gone on to hold senior roles in the club’s hierarchy after playing for them.

Asked whether Schweinsteiger could become a Bayern executive, Robben replied: “Yes, of course. But he has to want to do it.

“I don’t know what he is planning, maybe he will do something completely different. I don’t know.

“But, of course. I mean, just look at [Tuesday]: somebody like this in your club is always useful.”

Meanwhile, Bayern’s sporting director Salihamidzic has eased fears about the injury Leon Goretzka sustained during the testimonial.

Goretzka was withdrawn in the first half of the contest but Salihamidzic does not believe the problem he suffered is serious, although it may rule him out of Bayern’s trip to Stuttgart on Saturday.

“We’ll have a look into that, I think it’s not too bad,” Salihamidzic said.

“But it’s not good for us, of course, that he has at least anything, but it won’t be too bad. He’ll be out for some days.”

Goretzka joined the German champions this summer on a four-year contract and will be hoping he is fit to feature against his former side Schalke on September 22.
