Welcome aboard. With Survivor Series upon us, here’s Heat to get us all warmed up. Three matches on tap. We begin with……………..
Carlito vs Snitsky
Carlito looks disillusioned but shows a little shock as Snitsky makes his entrance. Sign guy is in the front row holding a sign saying: “Carlito is banned from supercuts”. Carlito decides to spit apple at Snitsky who grabs him by the throat and shoves him into the corner. Snitsky backelbows Carlito who spits the apple remains in the air. Snitsky slams, drops an elbow then traps Carlito in a double underhook wrench. Snitsky breaks to club the back. Snitsky scoops up Carlito looking for snake eyes but Carlito slips down and pushes Snitsky into the corner where Carlito lands some punches. Snitsky reverses an Irish whip but charges into Carlito’s feet. Carlito springs to the outside then off the top rope, taking Snitsky down with a springboard missile dropkick for a one count. Carlito gets reversed off the ropes but telegraphs a backbodydrop attempt with a boot to the head. Carlito acts cocky before running into a boot. Snitsky delivers the pumphandle slam for the 1-2-3. What a waste of Carlito. Rumours state he’s requested his release. Looks like he’s being jobbed out. Here is Your Winner: SNITSKY. Post match Snitsky stands over Carlito then leaves.
Survivor Series classics-1998. The Rock defeats Mankind via a Montreal finish then gets unveiled as the Corporate champion by the McMahons. Hopefully this isn’t an omen for later tonight.
Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin vs Steve Fender & Dinty Moore
Sign guy is back with a different sign. This one reads: “Shelton: Title hopes and hair, both dyed”. Benjamin stares him down before getting into the ring. Benjamin applies a side headlock and armbar on Moore. Moore forearms free, Benjamin sends Moore off the ropes into a backelbow. Haas takes over with some shots. Moore telegraphs a backbodydrop attempt with a boot before tagging out. Haas sends Fender’s shoulder into the corner a couple of times. Haas applies an armbar. Haas drives knees and a stomp onto the arm. Benjamin comes off the top rope driving a knee into Fender’s arm. Benjamin delivers a shoulderbreaker and snapmare. Benjamin cuts off a Fender fightback with a kick to the head. Benjamin lands punches to the head, sending Fender into his corner. Moore comes back in with some punches. After Moore telegraphs a backbodydrop attempt with a club to the back, Benjamin counters a suplex into a hangmans neckbreaker. Haas hangs Moore up on the top rope then holds him as Benjamin leapfrogs Haas and lands a running spike across Moore’s back. Haas back suplexes Moore and breaks a cover to give Fender a release overthrow german suplex. Haas goes to the corner as Benjamin whips Moore’s back into Haas’ knees. Moore staggers into a Benjamin T-Bone suplex for the 1-2-3. Good solid squash with a nice end sequence. Here Are Your Winners: CHARLIE HAAS & SHELTON BENJAMIN. Post match, Haas and Benjamin get their arms raised before high fiving, hugging and posing in the corners.
A short piece of John Cena at the 2007 UK Nickelodeon Kids Awards airs. Cena loses best sportsperson to David Beckham. Other nominees were Dame Kelly Holmes (Athlete) and Lewis Hamilton (F1 driver). In a kidding mood, Cena refuses to leave until he wins an award and holds his breath in protest. Pop band McFly award him most injured wrestler then send the slime squad after him which makes Cena leave the stage. Cena then issues a tongue in cheek challenge to David Beckham for WrestleMania 30 and we even get a match graphic hyping the possibility. Funny segment. Get well soon Cena. See you in 2008.
Survivor Series classics-1987. In the first annual event, Team Andre outlasts Team Hogan. After Hogan gets counted out, Andre hiptosses Bam Bam Bigelow to win as the sole survivor.
Paul London & Brian Kendrick vs The Highlanders vs Hardcore Holly & Cody Rhodes
(No 1 Contender’s Match-Winning Team gets a World Tag Team Title shot at Survivor Series)
Each team comes out in listed order with Holly and Rhodes coming out together to Holly’s music. This is the match I was unable to view on WWE.com on Thursday. Oh well better late than never. Holly and Rhodes slap hands with sign guy before getting in the ring. Coachman favours Holly and Rhodes for Rhodes’ enthusiasm and Holly’s physical presence. London begins by grabbing Robbie’s legs in the ropes. Robbie headbutts London down then sends his head into the corner. Rory clubs London who rolls under a clothesline attempt and comes back with a dropkick, inverted atomic drop and headscissors. Rory tags in Rhodes. Code of Honor between London and Rhodes. Rhodes tries some side headlock takedowns, London counters with a headscissors and Rhodes nips out. Rhodes applies a side headlock, Rhodes lands a cross body off the ropes but London rolls through for a one count. Londrick give Rhodes a double hiptoss for a nearfall. Kendrick applies a hammerlock, Rhodes tries a slam but Kendrick rolls through, hooking an armbar. Rhodes pushes Kendrick off then works a side headlock and shoulder tackle followed by a hiptoss counter. Rhodes misses an elbow then swats away Kendrick’s dropkick attempt. Cue a standoff. Both men hook arms, Rhodes applies another headlock as Grisham compares Rhodes to a young Randy Orton. Grisham talks about it in such a way that it spells out the eventual heel turn Rhodes will make to take him to the next level. Rhodes tags in Holly and Kendrick immediately backtracks while sizing up Holly. Holly unleashes some chops and an Irish whip. Kendrick gets his feet up on a charge then lands a cross body from the top rope for a nearfall. Holly catches Kendrick in a powerslam for a nearfall. Holly Irish whips, Kendrick sidesteps a charge and gets nearfalls from a schoolboy and crucifix pin attempt. Kendrick aims kicks to the back of Holly’s leg. Holly catches a charging Kendrick who slips behind and just gets Holly over with a headscisssors for a one count. Kendrick goes for a dropkick but Holly kicks him in the knee. Kendrick then reverses Holly off the ropes into a dropkick. London tags in, Londrick clothesline Holly over the top rope. Cue an annoying commercial break. This match has been really good so far. We return and it looks like I spoke too soon as unfortunately the Highlanders are in working over London’s back and chest with several shots. Robbie cuts off a London fightback with a single leg takedown before applying a front facelock/dragon sleeper. London uses knees to the head to escape. Rory works over the back, punches away on London’s head then stretches his arms out while wedging a knee into the back. London gets up and backs Rory into the corner twice to escape. London armdrags Rory who then misses an elbow. Robbie tags in and hooks a leg to prevent London making a tag. London hits kicks to the head but fails on two more tag attempts. Robbie attacks the back until London cuts off a rope whip, lands a kick and staggers back to the wrong corner allowing Rhodes to tag in. Rhodes dishes out a punch, clothesline, backbodydrop, head ram in the corner and running front bulldog to Robbie. Rory breaks up a cover at two but Kendrick sends himself and Rory over the top rope with a clothesline. Rhodes goes to the second rope as Holly tags himself in. Holly gives Robbie the Alabama slam as Rhodes looks on miffed. Holly covers 1-2-3. Here Are Your Winners: HARDCORE HOLLY & CODY RHODES. Really good match in parts. Post match sees Holly celebrate in the corner with Rhodes eventually joining in. We see the new Tag Title match graphic for Survivor Series then cut back to see Rhodes get his point across to Holly from the outside. Both then leave and head to the back with Holly motioning for title gold around his waist.
Grisham thanks us for watching to end the show.
Best match: The Main Event.
Worst match: Carlito vs Snitsky for the wastage of Carlito.
Show verdict: Thumbs up. Haas and Benjamin wrestled a good squash and the tag main event was great when the Highlanders weren’t in. Edited off the show this week were single squash wins for Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Super Crazy.
Survivor Series quick hits.
I would have preferred some more traditional elimination matches but the one there is has been made to feel really special this year due to the fantastic build. This past week in particular was some great TV in terms of getting extra heat on Rey Mysterio and the Hardys. I think Triple H will ultimately prevail, probably from a 4 on 1 situation which will kill the heels’ momentum but I still hold out hope that a Hardy can survive. Edge should return and interject himself in a bloody Hell in a Cell which should blowoff the Batista/Undertaker feud. I expect a title switch here but anticipate a screwy finish in the Orton/Michaels match. I hope I’m wrong but Vince is still obsessed with Montreal. I think Beth Phoenix will dominate the women’s match and hope that Jamie Noble gets added to the ECW title match. I’ll go with CM Punk retaining tonight as John Morrison and Miz did themselves no favours backstage at Smackdown this past week according to reports and JBL. I don’t care for Hornswoggle/Great Khali. Just keep it short. No pun intended. Finally I see new Tag champs who will then start teasing dissension in the weeks that follow.
Enjoy Survivor Series wherever you are. See you next week for Heat. Shaun.
