Max didn't miss out on Man Utd or PSG move, he never had any offers

Posted on March 1, 2019

The highly-rated left-back was heavily linked with Europe’s top clubs over the summer, but he ended up staying at Augsburg and signing a new contract

Philipp Max saw his performances for Augsburg last season sparked talk of interest from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, but he claims to have received no offers.

The 24-year-old left-back shot onto the transfer radar of leading clubs across Europe on the back of his efforts in the Bundesliga during the 2017-18 campaign.

Having become one of the most creative influences on the continent with 12 assists provided in the German top-flight, the highly-rated defender quickly became a wanted man.

Max was aware of the speculation swirling around him throughout a busy window, but insists he had no future call to make and was happy to commit to a new deal at Augsburg through to 2022.

He told Latten Kreuz: “It was an intense period where much was written, spoken and discussed. I’m just glad that the transfer window is closed now and I can focus on my season in Augsburg.

“I have signed a long-term contract until 2022, but of course I want to continue to develop, play internationally and take the next step.

“In spite of everything, I feel very comfortable in Augsburg. My girlfriend comes from here, the club is like a family and offers young players the opportunity to develop in peace. When we look good as a team, it’s easier for individuals to look good as well.”

Max added on the talk of interest from PSG and Manchester United: “Some things are printed in the newspaper, some things are passed on through my agent.

“It was not that I had to deal with an offer. It was important for me to focus on the pre-season. I think that went well.”

Max insists that staying at Augsburg was not in doubt because he did not have to weigh up the merits of making a high-profile move elsewhere.

He added: “It always depends on whether there are specific requests. That was not the case this summer. That’s why it was always clear to me that I wanted to concentrate fully on Augsburg.

“I’m just glad that the topic can now take a rest.”

Max is already up and running for the 2018-19 campaign in terms of assists, with another added to his impressive tally during a 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach prior to the international break.
