RB Leipzig star Kampl revels in seeing Bayern Munich struggle

Posted on March 1, 2019

The former Borussia Dortmund star says that he is enjoying seeing the Bundesliga giants fail to top the table, creating a competitive title race

RB Leipzig midfielder Kevin Kampl admits that he likes seeing Bayern Munich struggle in the Bundesliga.

Niko Kovac’s side are currently second in the league, two points behind Borussia Dortmund but only two ahead of both Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen. Leipzig lie fifth, three points off the defending champions.

Leipzig have lost just once thus far this season, winning four and drawing four of their nine games, while Bayern have already tasted defeat twice, at the hands of Gladbach and Hertha Berlin.

And Kampl readily admits that he enjoys seeing the usually dominant Bavarians stutter, though he expects them to soon “catch themselves” and right the ship.

“Everyone likes it, if it’s a little closer in the upper half of the table,” he told Goal and Spox.

“The more balanced the league is, the more beautiful and exciting it is for the spectators and also for the other teams. But I think that we should not interpret too much in the current small phase of weakness of Bayern.

“They will catch themselves. That’s what they showed with their victories against Wolfsburg and Mainz.”

Leipzig is Kampl’s seventh permanent club but, despite spending the majority of his career in Germany, he has yet to taste Bundesliga glory.

Nevertheless, he says that Leipzig are not targeting the Bundesliga title this season, despite his desperate desire to become champion

“It would be weird if I did not say that I dream of one day becoming a German champion,” he added. “But I do not think so far (ahead) now.

“We are more those who live in the here and now and try to perform week after week and earn a lot of points.

“It’s clear that we want to be as high up as possible in the end. Nevertheless, we remain modest and do not call the title win as a goal.”
