COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s took advantage of four major decisions and two forfeits in a 33-7 dual win over Northwestern (Iowa) on Friday, Nov. 16, in Collegeville.
Following a forfeit at 125 pounds, junior Alex Peck (Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s) gave SJU (1-0 dual record) a 10-0 lead with a 12-1 major decision at 133.
The Red Raiders (0-2 dual record) cut its deficit to 10-7 before the Johnnies rattled off two major decisions and three wins before the dual-ending forfeit at heavyweight.
Senior Chris Stevermer (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake), ranked No. 10 at 157 pounds in the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA) preseason rankings (Oct. 25), started his season with a 16-5 major decision.
Junior Nick Schuler (Roseville, Minn./Totino-Grace) followed him with a major decision of his own, 12-1, over Northwestern’s Zach Fishman. Fishman was ranked No. 12 in the NAIA preseason rankings released Oct. 24.
Sophomore Matt Rogers (Dillingham, Alaska/Mt. Edgecumbe) missed a major decision by one point (13-6) at 174 pounds and junior David Rademacher (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied a 12-7 decision in place of second-ranked Mitch Hagen (Sunburg, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) at 184.
Junior Riad Abu-Smail (Branchburg, N.J./St. Benedict’s Prep) posted a 4-3 win at 197.
The Johnnies travel to compete at the annual Augsburg Open on Saturday, Nov. 17. The tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.
