Mavericks Ink Five Recruits During Early Signing Period

Posted on September 6, 2020

Mankato, Minn. – Head wrestling coach Jim Makovsky has announced that five prep athletes have signed their national letters of intent to attend Minnesota State University.

Commiting to MSU during the early signing period are Adam Cooling (Madelia, Minn.), Weston Droegemueller (Wayzata, Minn.), Gabe Flandrick (New Richmond, Wis.), Tanner Mills (Albertville, Minn.) and Darick Vancura (Jackson, Minn.). All signings are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

“Our program is excited to announce the addition of five high school seniors to the Maverick Wrestling family,” said Head Coach Jim Makovsky. “Our program has a great tradition and the heart and soul of our program has been hard-nosed, tough and aggressive wrestlers. All five of these guys displayed these characteristics and we are grateful that they chose Minnesota State to continue their wrestling and academic pursuits. They have a lot of talent, but we were equally impressed by their character, passion for the sport and leadership qualities.”

Cooling is entering his senior season for Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther High School with a 157-40 record and is the returning state champion at 145 lbs. A four-time MSHSL tournament participant, Cooling also placed fourth in 2011. The Madelia, Minn., native also placed fourth at the 2012 USA Wrestling Nationals and is a USA Nationals Preseason All-American.

Flandrick is coming off of a runner-up finish at the 2012 WIAA tournament after recording a third-place finish in 2011 and fourth-place in 2010. Flandrick owns a 124-15 career record for Somerset High School. He also won a 2012 WIAA football state championship playing for the Spartans.

Mills is coming off of a third-place finish at the 2012 MSHSL tournament wrestling for Kimball High School. He earned a third-place finish at the 2011 USA wrestling nationals. Mills is a three-time state qualifier and owns a 149-26 record entering his senior campaign. Mills will be wrestling for Saint Michael-Albertville High School this season.
