FAYETTE, Iowa – Augustana won four bouts, but two pins gave sixth-ranked Upper Iowa a 24-13 win in the final regular season match for the Vikings. Augustana finishes the season with a 12-6 record, 5-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while the Peacocks are 15-2-1, 7-1 in the NSIC, entering postseason competition.
Needing to get off to a quick start, No. 3 TJ North did just that. A well-executed 9-1 win gave the Vikings a 4-0 lead after the 125-pound bout. Morgan Engbrecht and Matt Paulus were knotted up 2-2 after Engbrecht scored a reversal early in the second period of the 133-pound bout. Paulus then quickly responded with a reversal of his own and pinned Engbrecht at the 3:57 mark to put the Peacocks up 6-4.
Jeremiah Peterson surrendered just one point in the first two period, giving up an escape to Jordan Roths in the second period. Peterson then tied the bout at 1-1 with a late escape, but Roths tallied enough riding time to earn the deciding second point and win a 2-1 decision.
Tasked with taking on the No. 2 149-pound wrestler in NCAA Division II, Shawn Hatlestad wrestled well, but couldn’t come out on top. Hatlestad recorded two escapes in the first two periods, but Edwin Cooper’s three takedows were too much despite Hatlestad’s three late points. The Augustana sophomore lost by a 7-5 decision and Upper Iowa led 12-4.
Bradyn Neises turned in an impressive performance at 157 pounds, earning a 7-3 decision. Zak Benitz tied the match at 3-3 with a reversal in the third period, but Neises escaped and scored two more points with a late takedown on top of his riding time to earn his 10th win of the season.
Drawing the Vikings within two points in the team score, Tim Weber needed an overtime period, but took down the eighth-ranked 165-pound wrestler in the first overtime to win 3-1.
Drake Fanslau was pitted against the No. 5 184-pound wrestler in the 174-pound bout and performed admirably, but UIU’s Blake Sorensen was too much. Fanslau surrendered three takedowns, escaping two of them, eventually losing 8-2.
Sean Derry then got the Vikings back on track, winning his 26th bout of the season. Derry held a 3-0 lead entering the third and added two more with a late takedown to go with his riding time for a 6-2 win.
In a top-five matchup at 197 pounds, No. 2 Carl Broghammer defeated No. 5 Jayd Docken. Broghammer scored on three takedowns, added an escape and riding time to win 8-3 and push the Upper Iowa lead to 18-13.
Still within striking distance, the Vikings sent out Michael Lowman to take on No. 6 Logan Hopp, but the Peacocks secured the win just 1:10 into the 285-pound bout. Hopp scored a takedown then pinned Lowman to give the Peacocks a 24-13 win.
The Vikings will now head to Edmond, Okla. for the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships on Feb. 28 and March 1. The top five wrestlers in each weight class will receive bids to the NCAA Championships on March 14 and 15 in Cleveland, Ohio.
