India’s prime minister has been accused of selling off the nation’s heritage after the government said it would hand responsibility for its iconic Red Fort to a private company.
New Delhi’s Ministry of Tourism last week transferred “maintenance responsibilities” for the 17th century fortress to the Dalmia Group company, which left critics questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to the country’s landmarks.
"They are handing over the iconic monument to a private business. What is your commitment to the idea of India, to the history of India?” said the opposition Congress Party’s chief spokesman, Pawan Khera.
“We know you have no commitment, but we still want to ask you."
