In the biggest wrestling deal made in this country in recent years, Eric Bischoff put together a deal with NBC-TV to begin airing two-hour prime time wrestling telecasts beginning on 2/14 with a show live from the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas and a second show that will be broadcast live head-to-head with the WWF’s Wrestlemania on 3/28.
The deal had been in negotiations for at least two weeks and was finalized this past weekend. Little is known about the deal at press time other than it was for multiple specials, starting at either 8 or 9 p.m. Eastern time, the first of which will, not so coincidentally, be put on head-to-head with the WWF’s St. Valentine’s Day Massacre PPV show which is coming from Memphis. While no other dates for other shows are finalized or even if the deal extends past two shows (it is believed that tentatively it does but ratings will determine the final answer), the idea that these specials will often or even always go head-to-head with WWF PPV shows would not be an uneducated guess.
Although nothing is official, one would also suspect that the deal will speed up the return of both Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage to WCW, as no doubt the Hogan name would mean more to NBC officials than any other name in pro wrestling, and thus was probably used to close the deal. In addition, NBC-TV is scheduled to get heavily into using pro wrestling as a cross-promotional vehicle, using many of its biggest TV stars on the inaugural show including Matthew Perry of “Friends.” Hogan has again become a valuable commodity in the wrestling world because FOX has also been interested in starting its own prime time weekly wrestling series, and was hopeful of beginning in February, and there were tons of internal rumors in the profession that it would try and built its series around Hogan.
