Late pins propel Augsburg College past the Vikings on Senior Day

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Two back-to-back pins at 285 and 125 pounds helped No. 11-ranked Augsburg College, in NCAA Division III, to a 24-19 dual victory over Augustana College on Senior Day. The Auggies improved their season to 4-1, while the Vikings dropped to 6-2 on the season.

Each team won five bouts, but the two consecutive pins propelled the Auggies past the Vikings.

The dual started out at the 133 pound bout where Morgan Engbrecht came out of the gates firing giving Augustana an early 3-0 lead against Augsburg College. Engbrecht won in a 4-2 sudden victory over Chad Bartschenfeld.

Marcus Hamer responded for the Auggies winning a 3-1 decision over Austin Jordan to tie the dual at three apiece. In the 149 pound bout, Jacob Anderson accumulated four near-falls to win a major decision of 15-2 over Will Keeter, who is ranked 10th in the country at Division III. With Anderson’s win the Vikings jumped ahead 7-3.

Augustana’s Bradyn Neises pushed the Vikings lead with a 5-3 decision over Grant Parker in the 157 pound bout. Followed by Shawn Hatlestad (165 pounds) pinning Kurt Knutsen in 1:16 to give the Vikings their biggest lead of 16-3.

Augsburg College answered with Eric Hensel (174 pounds) pinning Parker Swanson in 0:31, followed by Tommy Teigen (184 pounds) continuing the momentum for the Auggie’s with a 6-2 decision over Aero Amo to cut their deficit to only four points,16-12.

Jayd Docken ranked fourth in the country at 197 pounds, pushed the Vikings ahead 19-12 with a 4-1 decision over Matt Hechsel, who is ranked 10th in the country at Division III.

In the two final bouts, Donny Longendyle pinned Michael Lowman in 4:23 in the heavyweight bout, followed by No. 1-ranked Mike Fuenffinger (125 pounds) pinning Javier Vieyra in 6:04 where the Auggies produced the final score in their favor, 24-19.

Augsburg competes next at the NWCA Division III National Duals this Friday and Saturday in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Augustana returns to action next Friday and Saturday Jan. 9-10 at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.
