While the United States national team came away with a victory over their biggest rivals on Tuesday night, their joy will no doubt be tempered by an injury to star Weston McKennie.
The 20-year-old Schalke midfielder earned the start for the USA against Mexico in Nashville – his second in this international window and fifth straight for the nation.
However, his night would be ended early as he was forced off in the 40th minute, replaced by Julian Green.

Reports during the game indicated McKennie told trainers the issue was with his knee and that it was a non-contact injury.
U.S. Soccer confirmed McKennie’s removal was due to injury, calling his issue a knee sprain.
Tyler Adams would score the lone goal minutes after Mexico was reduced to 10-men in the second half to give the USA the 1-0 victory.
McKennie is now likely to be an unwelcome question mark for Schalke as he returns from international duty with his club entering a busy time in their fixture list.
The Bundesliga side is in action against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday and will follow that up with its Champions League opener at home against Porto on Tuesday. A match against Bayern Munich follows the next weekend.
McKennie has started and gone the distance in both of Schalke’s two Bundesliga contests this season – a pair of losses to Wolfsburg and Hertha BSC respectively.
