Jumping In At Jamestown

Posted on July 11, 2020

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Concordia had four wrestlers earn runner-up finishes and recorded 12 Top 5 finishes at the season-opening Jamestown Invite.

The Cobbers had 20 wrestlers compete at the first multi-team meet of the year. Concordia had at least one Top 5 finisher in eight of the 10 weight classes.

Concordia had a pair of veterans and two newcomers lead the way at the Jamestown Invite. Senior Jacob Johnson, junior Ben Baumgartner and freshmen Cole Kubesh and Ethan Kimber all came home with second-place finishes after falling in the championship match at their weight class.

Johnson went 2-1 on his way to finishing second at 174. He won by decision in the quarterfinal match and then scored a pin fall in the semifinal bout at the 6:51 mark. Johnson then lost to a Division II wrestler in the title match.

Baumgartner started his junior season by posting an 11-5 decision in the first round. He then pinned his opponent from Jamestown in the quarterfinals and advanced to the championship match with a 5-2 decision over teammate Ty Johnson who placed third in the weight class. Baumgartner lost in the title bout to Rudy Guillen from the University of Mary.

Kubesh was one of the team’s two competitors at the 125-lb weight class. He earned runner-up honors in his first college tournament by recording a 3-1 record. He won by major decision and a pin fall to get to the semifinals and then collected an 18-3 technical fall in the semifinals. Kubesh lost in the championship match to Nate Humann of the University of Mary.

Kimber is one of the most decorated of the Cobbers’ talented first-year athletes. He didn’t disappoint in his first college invite in the 197-lb weight class. He went 3-1 and had the closest championship bout of any of the CC second-place finishers. He dropped an 8-4 decision in the title match after winning by an injury default and then recording pin falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

Concordia had five returning athletes and three newcomers post the other eight Top 5 finishes at the Jamestown Invite.

Ty Johnson, Joe Heinz, Travis Deegan, Nick Gravdahl and Kody Van Den Eykel were the veterans who placed in the Top 5 while freshmen Jake Nohre, Tony Struntz and Bryce Kallenbach all had Top finishes in their first college meets.

Nohre, Heinz, Gravdahl and Kallenbach all led Concordia in wins on the day as they each collected four victories.
