SIOUX FALLS, S.D.– The Augustana wrestling team will hit the road this weekend as they travel to Kenosha, Wis. for the Jim Koch Wisconsin Open on Saturday, Dec. 1. The all-day event begins at 9 a.m. and will take place at the DeSimone Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. In their last action, the Vikings had 16 individuals place at the Finn Grinaker Open in Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday, Nov. 17. Augustana was led by redshirt senior Colin Ayers who went 5-0 taking first at 157 pounds. Ayers picked up three major decisions on his way to the finals where he defeated Northern State’s Walker Carr by decision (8-3).
A trio of freshmen Jack Huffman (133lbs unattached), Kolby Kost (174lbs unattached), and Steven Hajas (285lbs unattached) all went undefeated en route to their championships.
Junior Brandon Carroll went 2-1 to finish second at 133 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Jackson Sweeney got wins in two tight matches to earn his way to the 165-pound championship match where he would fall to Devin Donovan of St. Cloud State in a 5-2 decision.
Redshirt sophomore Ethan Cota took third at 125 pounds finishing 2-2. Redshirt sophomore Jebben Keyes went 3-1 at 141 pounds pinning two opponents en route to a third-place finish. At 197 pounds, redshirt senior Clayton Wahlstrom finished 3-2 with two major decision victories in his third-place finish.
Following the Jim Koch Open this weekend, the Vikings will have next weekend off and resume their schedule Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Midwest Classic Invitational in Indianapolis, IND. The first chance for Viking fans to catch the team at home is Jan. 9 when they host Dakota Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
