St. Cloud State’s Eischens and Velasquez named to Academic All-District Team

Posted on July 2, 2020

St. Cloud State University wrestlers junior Kolton Eischens (Pierz, Minn./Healy H.S.) and senior Brett Velasquez (Bennington, Neb./H.S.) have both been named to the 2018-19 Google Cloud NCAA Division II Men’s Academic All-District 7 At-Large First Team. Eischens and Velasquez are the only two student-athletes from the always rugged Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference to receive recognition on this year’s 2018-19 Google Cloud NCAA Division II Men’s Academic All-District 7 At-Large Team.

The 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Men’s At-Large Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes outstanding student-athletes in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third team (if applicable) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in June.

The At-Large Team includes student-athletes in the sports of wrestling, swimming and diving, tennis, golf, ice hockey, rifle, skiing, fencing, lacrosse, volleyball, gymnastics and water polo.

A two-time All-American for the Huskies at 174-pounds, Eischens helped lead the Huskies to their second consecutive NCAA Division II team title in 2018-19 (and the team’s fourth since 2015). An Academic All-NSIC and NWCA All-Academic award winner, Eischens placed fourth at this year’s NCAA championships in the 174-pound bracket and he ended the year with a 25-4 overall record. Eischens placed first in the 174-pound division at the 2019 NCAA Division II Super Regional and also took home first place honors from the Dakota Wesleyan Open this season. He is a technology management major at St. Cloud State.

Velasquez finished a sterling career at St. Cloud State in 2018-19. A four-time All-American, Velasquez posted a 23-5 record for the Huskies in 2018-19. He placed fourth in the 125-pound division at the 2019 NCAA Division II championships and also placed first at the 2019 NCAA DII Super Regional and the 2018 Dakota Wesleyan Open. Velasquez charted a 103-14 career record for the Huskies and was an NCAA DII national champ at 125-pounds in 2016. He is a three-time Google Cloud NCAA DII Academic All-District 7 At-Large First Team award winner and a two-time Google Cloud NCAA Division II At-Large Academic All-American. He is a biomedical sciences major at SCSU and a two-time recipient of the NSIC’s Elite 18 Award for academic excellence.

The Huskies completed another historic season in 2018-19 under the leadership of head coach Steve Costanzo. SCSU won its fourth NCAA team title and also claimed the 2019 NCAA Division II Super Region championship along with the 2019 NWCA Division II National Duals championship. SCSU posted a perfect 20-0 overall record and won its eighth consecutive NSIC championship with an 8-0 record.

The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. The NAIA Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA national office.
