Bayern vow to support Coman during lengthy spell on sidelines

The France international picked up an ankle injury in the Bundesliga holders’ opening game and faces a protracted lay-off

Bayern Munich forward Kingsley Coman is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines following successful ankle surgery, but the club has said that they will support him “all the way” through his rehabilitation.

The 22-year-old was injured just before half-time in the Bundesliga holders’ opening game of the new season against Hoffenheim as Niko Kovac’s side got their title defence off to a winning start with a 3-1 victory.

They will be forced to continue their campaign without the services of the Frenchman however for an undefined period of time as he recuperates off the field, but sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic gave assurances that Coman would be well looked after by the team at the Allianz Arena.

“I’m convinced Kingsley will come back stronger. We’ll support him all the way,” Salihamidzic said following news confirmation of a positive procedure.

It is not the first time Coman has been ruled out through injury this year; he missed France’s triumphant World Cup campaign owing to a knock on the same ankle.

Right-back Joshua Kimmich stated that he found himself dazed following his team-mate’s injury, adding that it left him close to crying.

“The injury is very bitter,” the Germany international added. “For him it’s even worse because he just got back, having missed [Russia].

“It was his first Bundesliga game [of the season] and he played outstanding. The fact this happens again is not so easy for the head.

“I was shocked. I almost had tears in my eyes when I saw him lying there.”

Coman made a combined 26 appearances during spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus after turning professional, before he joined Bayern on loan from the latter in 2015.

He made a permanent move from the Serie A champions to Germany two years later in 2017 and helped the club to their sixth Bundesliga title in a row, winning the trophy for the third time himself.

Bayern next travel to Stuttgart on September 1 before the commencement of the international break.

They then resume their Bundesliga campaign against Bayer Leverkusen a fortnight later on September 15.
