Bayern Munich hit 24-year low with latest Bundesliga setback

Posted on March 1, 2019

There were more goalkeeping woes for Manuel Neuer but it was a day to remember for Dodi Lukebakio as Niko Kovac’s side continue to struggle

Things just keep getting worse for Bayern Munich, who are on their worst home Bundesliga run for almost a quarter of a century after dropping points yet again at the Allianz Arena.

Having gone into Saturday’s match seven points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund, Bayern needed a victory against Fortuna Dusseldorf to keep the chase up.

But, while Dortmund continued their imperious form with victory away to Mainz, Niko Kovac’s men stuttered once more.

Having led 2-0 and 3-1, the Bavarians contrived to surrender their advantage as Dodi Lukebakio completed his hat-trick with two late goals to seal a 3-3 draw.

Bayern now trail their Klassiker rivals by nine points as they languish in the Bundesliga’s fifth position, with pressure continuing to mount on Kovac’s shoulders.

Such poor form is almost unheard of for the winners of the last six national titles, especially in front of their own fans.

Not since 1994 have Bayern gone four Bundesliga matches without a win at home, having drawn three and lost one since overcoming Leverkusen 3-1 way back in September.

The German giants have also gone eight games without a clean sheet, their worst defensive run since 2000, when they conceded in 12 successive outings.

Manuel Neuer, in particular, has come under the spotlight for his fading performances in the Bayern net following a distinctly unimpressive World Cup in Germany’s colours.

Dusseldorf’s three goals came from just five shots on target; and in total Neuer has seen 14 of the last 17 attempts on goal go past him.

Lukebakio, too, made a small piece of history with his heroics at the Allianz Arena.

The Belgium Under-21 international’s triple made him the first man to put three past Bayern in the Bundesliga since April 2001, when Ebbe Sand achieved the feat.

Bayern will now look to reverse their fortunes in the Champions League, where their fine form has been in stark contrast to those domestic woes.

A single point against Benfica on Tuesday will guarantee the Bavarians a last-16 spot, having gone unbeaten for their first four games of the group phase.
