WATERVILLE, ME — A couple who recently had dinner out at a Waterville, Maine, restaurant and bar left their server an enormous tip — $2,000 on a $48.76 bill — with one simple instruction: Split the windfall among the staff.
The Silver Street Tavern posted a photo of the bill on its Facebook page, writing that “the kind gentleman … had such a great experience” that he wanted to share his appreciation with the entire staff.
When the generous gratuity was split 14 ways, each member of the staff got $142 and change.
Server Samantha Clark, 21, told the Portland Press Herald she was stunned when she saw the $2,000 tip, especially after a few things went wrong during the man’s night out with his wife. For one thing, someone took away his wine glass by mistake.
When the man approached the bar manager, Clark was certain he was complaining about the service. The bar manager asked that the bill be transferred to the bar for collection, saying only to Clark: “That’s one of the coolest conversations I’ve ever had with a table.”
When her shift ended, she and other employees were scrolling through Facebook and learned of the man’s big-hearted gesture. He preferred to remain anonymous.

Clark, a senior at Thomas College, plans to apply her share of the tip to her college tuition.
Clark had taken over the table from Zack Denis, who was also surprised at the magnanimous gesture.
“But I’m also not that surprised,” Denis, who has worked at the Silver Street Tavern for three years, told the Press Herald. “We have a great team of people here that work really hard and work together as a team. This person might have owned a restaurant and seen how well we worked together or something like that. I don’t know. But where there’s good teamwork, I think it was well-deserved.”
