While there might be no beating Bernie Sanders’ “I wrote the damn plan” line, Elizabeth Warren again appeared to be a big winner in the second Democratic debate. Tuesday night’s slate saw Warren and a fiery Sanders defend their progressive ideas against a field of mostly second- and third-tier moderate candidates who tried to take the fight to them.
Warren and Sanders were joined on stage by Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Congressman Beto O’Rourke, but they weren’t able to spar with former Vice President Joe Biden, who will headline Wednesday night’s debate along with California Sen. Kamala Harris.
Warren and Sanders, who sit directly behind Biden in most polls, didn’t attempt to separate from one another. Instead, they bonded together to fend off a flurry of jabs from other candidates.
Warren’s big moment of the night came at the expense of former Maryland Rep. John Delaney. When Delaney criticized progressive ideas as simply not feasible, she delivered perhaps the line of the night.
“So I think Democrats win when we run on real solutions not impossible promises, when we run on things that are workable, not fairy tale economics,” Delaney said.
Then Warren landed a haymaker.
“I don’t understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we really can’t do and shouldn’t fight for,” she said, triggering a round of applause.
While Delaney got some screen time and stuck to his guns, it’s never good to be on the wrong side of the biggest viral smackdown of the night.
