Sam Allardyce has revealed he was interested in signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Everton before he eventually joined Arsenal.
The former Toffees boss told talkSPORT he knew the striker was ‘desperate’ to move to the Premier League and had spoken to club bosses about the possibility of bringing him to Goodison Park last January.
However, it became clear that Aubameyang’s price tag was just too much for the Merseyside club.
The Gabon international later moved from Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal for a club-record £56million.
Speaking on Tuesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Big Sam said: “Aubameyang was desperate to come to the Premier League and we didn’t really know if it was definitely a yes [to Everton] or not – but it was probably not.
“The rumours were that he really wanted to come to the Premier League and he was desperate to come.
“Whether that could have happened or not, we never got that far.
“It was always going to be too much money for January, because of what the club spent previous to me arriving.”
