Nico Rosberg has described Mercedes as his “dream team” after extending his contract for a further two seasons.
It was announced on Friday morning that Rosberg had signed a new deal which will keep him at Mercedes until the end of the 2018 season. By the time his current contract expires, Rosberg will have done nine consecutive seasons with the team having joined when Mercedes returned to F1 at the start of 2010.
Asked if there was ever a chance of him not staying, Rosberg replied: “No, I’ve always said that I’m happy here.
“I’m very, very happy with signing because it is my dream team and it’s my family away from home. It’s my racing family and we have a great time together. I’m sure we will have a very, very successful future also.
“Of course Gerhard Berger took charge of it for me, that was the best decision for sure and I’m very thankful that he accepted to help out with it. He knows what he’s doing, for sure, so I’m very happy with the end result.
“A few more years together at least and it’s the best team. They give me an incredible car out there every time out there, even today on track it was phenomenal again. So yeah, it’s special.”
And Rosberg explained he appointed Berger to help out with negotiations to allow him to focus on his title challenge.
“Two reasons. One, because he knows what he’s doing. The guy’s clever, so he’s done a great job with the negotiations and everything so I’m very happy with the end result. And secondly because it always takes some focus off, negotiations are such a big thing. It’s such an important thing in my job life and it allowed me to put 110% focus on my race driving and that’s what I wanted to do.”
