Even though the polling was over on May 19, campaign materials, mostly made of single-use plastic, can still be found hanging on city walls, fluttering from lampposts and scattered on roads, parks and open spaces, posing serious threat to environment.
These materials can choke the drains even before the onset of monsoon. Though the Election Commission of India (ECI) had ordered removal of campaign materials within 48 hours of polling dates, environment activists claimed political parties don’t care to follow such directives.
By a conservative estimate of 2016, each assembly constituency in Kolkata generates 10 tonnes of plastic campaign material.
