Like so many fashion houses today, Valentino is experiencing a major turning of the tides.
On Thursday, just one day after the brand’s fall 2016 couture show, the Rome-based group confirmed to WWD that Co-Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri is leaving the company after 17 years. Pierpaolo Piccioli will take over as sole creative director. In a joint statement, the former design partners addressed their 25 years in business together and expressed a desire to move forward with their “artistic path in an individual way.”
Chiuri noted that she “shared with Pierpaolo a great part of [her] professional life and it has been an experience made of many successful creative achievements together,” and that she was “ready to embark on a new professional challenge.”
Piccioli said, “Valentino and the people with whom I work with are a great part of my life. My decision of bringing forward the creative guide of this maison is driven by the strong passion that triggers my work and by the desire of continuing to express here my stylistic vision.”
The official confirmation of Chiuri’s departure comes weeks after reports that Chiuri was tapped to take over at Christian Dior as its seventh creative director.
