If you’re like us, you follow John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s Instagram accounts religiously and already know that their young daughter Luna is a fan of her dad’s piano playing. Last week, Teigen posted an adorable video of Legend performing at home while she and Luna bounced along.
It turns out, the sing-along is not a rare occurrence in the Legend household. Legend stopped by InStyle’s portrait studio at the Toronto International Film Festival to discuss his hotly anticipated new film, La La Land, with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The movie is a nod to classic Hollywood musicals and Legend plays a bandleader who works closely with Gosling’s character, who is a pianist. (In real life, Legend said Gosling’s “piano playing was exquisite. It was really good—I was genuinely impressed.”)
Legend also wrote an original song for the film and told us that he often road tests his music at home for Teigen before it goes public. “She hears the stuff that’s on my album as I’m working on songs or as they’re starting to come together.”
As for Luna, Legend said he knows how to tell when he’s gotten her stamp of approval, too. “If she stops crying, that’s a good sign. But who knows? She’s so unpredictable.”

This week marks a major milestone for Legend and Tiegen. The couple will celebrate 10 years together on Tuesday, and three years of marriage on Wednesday. “I met Chrissy in L.A. in 2006. I wasn’t living in L.A. at the time but I would come for work and come to make music, come to perform, come to shoot videos, etcetera,” Legend said, noting the closeness of their anniversary dates was purely coincidence. “Because of venue availability in Italy for our wedding, it just so happened that we got married the day after the date that we met.”

One thing he’s keeping a secret though: their anniversary celebration plans. “Uh, you know, we’ll do something,” he said with a smile.
