Manchester United news: Wayne Rooney wants club to ‘go all out’ for Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino

Posted on March 1, 2019

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United should appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent manager.

The 33-year-old is currently playing for MLS side DC United and was full of praise for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has won his first six games in charge of the club since replacing Jose Mourinho.

But he’d still move for Pochettino if it was up to him.

“Ole was a fantastic player and is a clever person and has come in and let them play and you can see the results,” Rooney, who scored 253 goals for United in 559 games, told ESPN.

“I do not think anyone would have expected the start to his managerial career at Manchester United.

“I think first of all you have to give Ole the opportunity. If he continues the way he is going then I’m sure it will be a discussion he will have with Ed Woodward and the Glaziers about whether he keeps the job.

“But I think, if I had the opportunity to appoint someone, then I would go all out for Mauricio Pochettino,” Rooney added.

“I think Manchester United has, certainly over the last 20 or 30 years, based themselves on youth players coming through.

“I think Pochettino gets the best out of his players whether they are young and old.

“He gives youth players the chance and you see some of the players he has brought through at Tottenham and Southampton go on to play for the national team.

“I think he ticks every box in terms of his quality as a coach and willingness to give young players a chance.”
