Amy Winehouse really left an impression on Jay-Z when they first met, but the encounter caused him to feel concern.
The rapper vividly remembers his first-ever meeting with Winehouse—who died in 2011 at 27, after years of struggling with drug and alcohol addiction—following one of her performances in New York City because, to his surprise, Winehouse stuttered as she spoke to him.

“I was like, ‘You don’t even stutter. Why are you doing that?’” Jay-Z said in an interview on Tidal’s Rap Radar podcast this week. “I looked at her, and I was like, ‘Stay with us.’ The first time we hung out, I told her, ‘Stay with us.’”
Although the 4:44 rapper and husband to Beyoncé offered Winehouse a place to unwind and regroup, the Back to Black singer had other ideas about how she wanted to take care of herself, and they involved music more than other people, Jay-Z recalled.
