Having experienced FA Cup and World Cup heartache this year, the Tottenham and England midfielder is determined to go one step further this season
Tottenham are determined to go the final step and win a trophy this season, says Eric Dier, who suffered semi-final heartache in the FA Cup final as well as with England at the World Cup this year.
Dier, who scored the vital penalty in the last-16 shootout victory over Colombia, is proud of the progress England made under Gareth Southgate in Russia but insists titles are fundamental both for club and country.
“If you don’t win it you could get knocked out in the first round or lose in the final, it doesn’t matter,” he said.
“At the end of the day we’re in this to win. We had a fantastic World Cup, we broke down many barriers as a national team. We managed to get to the semi-finals, which was incredible but at the same time winning is the most important thing.
“Only Hugo [Lloris] can know what it feels like because he won it and only winning it matters. Nothing else matters.
“Everyone else, back here at Tottenham, [we had] the semi-final last year but we need to go one that step further and win. We’re all in this to win it and we all want to win.”
Dier admits there is a spring to his captain Lloris’s step since returning to club duty after claiming the trophy for France.
“Hugo can be a changed man because Hugo won it!” said Dier. “Everyone else, we’re in the same boat.
“He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world, first and foremost. He’s someone that everyone in the squad looks up to. Even more now.

“To look up to the quality he brings, the work ethic he brings, the attitude he brings. His style is a quiet style, but silence is sometimes deadly.”
