Shaw insists Mbappe & PSG did not put 'massive dent' in Man Utd's confidence

Posted on September 28, 2019

The Red Devils suffered a first defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when facing the French champions, but remain buoyant heading into a tie with Chelsea

Luke Shaw insists Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain have not put “a massive dent” into the confidence of Manchester United.

The Red Devils entered the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter with the French title holders buoyed by an 11-game unbeaten run under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

They were brought crashing back down to earth at Old Trafford as Mbappe and Presnel Kimpembe found the target on a forgettable night for United which also saw Paul Pogba sent off.

Solskjaer’s troops will get the chance to offer a positive response to that setback in another heavyweight fixture when they travel to Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday.

Shaw claims that trip will be made in high spirits, with United still revelling in the feel-good factor that recent performances and results have delivered.

The England international told MUTV: “I think this will now be our biggest test.

“Obviously, we’ve been winning and winning really well. We’ve had a couple of tough away games which we’ve won and now we’ll see how we adapt to a loss as we haven’t had one in a while. We’ll see how we go into the next game and we want to win that one.

“It’s the most confident I’ve felt within the group in a long while, especially before the PSG game, as I felt so confident in the team. What we have been doing is very positive with the mentality going into that tie but it wasn’t our day.

“But we’re all very confident and we take that into training every day. The results have been showing that. Look, we can’t take one loss as a massive dent to us. It’s just a learning curve and we go again.”

While United have it all to do if their European campaign is to be extended in 2019, a visit to Stamford Bridge presents them with a chance to remain on another path to major silverware.

Shaw is looking forward to the challenge, with Chelsea having endured an inconsistent run of late to suggest that Red Devils may be running into them at a good time.

“These are the games you want to play,” said the United full-back.

“You’ve got to beat the best teams in the competition to win it and it’s better to do it now, and get them out of the way.

“We know what we need to do against Chelsea as we had the game there earlier in the season and I felt we played really well and were unlucky not to get the win. We’ll remember the positives from that game and take it into Monday.
