Understanding the Horizontal Form-Fill-Seal (HFFS) Process

Modern flow wrappers utilize a horizontal form-fill-seal system, distinguished from vertical machines by the product’s ingress path. The key differentiator is that items travel lengthwise through the machine’s longitudinal axis, allowing for gentle handling of fragile items like baked goods, medical devices, and heavy hardware. The packaging film is unwound from a reel and shaped around a stainless-steel forming box. The jaws’ dwell time directly correlates with packaging speed, creating a machine throughput bottleneck. Most horizontal machines operate between 50 and 300 packages per minute, depending on product height and film characteristics.

As the packaging industry shifts toward multilayer recyclable materials, sealing jaw temperature profiles become increasingly complex to manage.

Precision Mechanisms Behind the Sealing System

The longitudinal sealing is achieved through either continuous rotary motion or intermittent strokes. In continuous systems, rotating fin seal wheels create constant heat contact. For pillow packs requiring a flat bottom seal, a separate hot-air or ultrasonic system welds film edges before the product officially enters the forming box chain.

A frequently overlooked element is the sealing jaw lubrication. Applying release agent onto jaw surfaces prevents film sticking, especially when working with high-sugar content products. Modern machines integrate nozzle cleaning systems that remove oxidized polymer residues during automatic cycles, eliminating need for manual die cleaning.

Film-Reducing Devices and Product Distribution Infeed

Long auger infeed and shuttle systems align product spacing, coordinating with the sealing jaw pitch.
