After leaving the field in tears due to an ankle problem in Toulon’s Top 14 clash with Lyon on Saturday, Cheslin Kolbe’s injury does not appear to be as serious as initially feared.
That was the word from Toulon head coach Pierre Mignoni who said after the match that it looks like the 29-year-old suffered a sprain and not a fracture.
Kolbe was in tears as he was carted off the field shortly after scoring a try in Toulon’s 27-23 victory at the Stade Gerland in Lyon on Saturday.
Hopeful injury is not too serious
Mignoni has allayed fears of the seriousness of injury, however, and said he is hopeful that the Springbok will not be sidelined for a lengthy period.
“At first sight, it doesn’t look like a fracture, it seems to be a sprain,” he told Midi Olympique. “We are waiting for some tests to determine how serious it is.”
The seriousness of Kolbe’s injury will also be a concern to South Africa’s director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus, and Springboks head coach Jacques Nienaber.
Kolbe is a vital cog in the Boks machine and a genuine superstar at club level and in the international arena.
Test debut in 2018
He has been a regular in his country’s matchday squads since making his Test debut against Australia in 2018 and has played in 23 Tests so far, scoring 74 points.
The following year, he was one of the Boks’ star performers during their victorious campaign at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and is expected to be part of their squad when they defend their title at the global showpiece later that year.
