Flanker Jed Holloway says that the Wallabies’ forwards pack is disappointed with how their lineout functioned in the first Test against South Africa, and the set-piece is one of their work-ons for this week.
Despite claiming an impressive 25-17 win over the Springboks, the Wallabies won only seven of their 13 lineouts at the Adelaide Oval, highlighting how far off the mark Dave Rennie’s side was from the touchline.
Nevertheless, the win gets the Wallabies back on track as they bounced back from a record loss to Michael Cheika’s Argentina in round two of the Rugby Championship.

Work ethic another work-on
Holloway highlighted work ethic off the ball as another point of improvement as they prepare to weather the inevitable bounce back from the world champions.
“We’re hugely disappointed in the way our lineout functioned, but we’ve been working hard on that … we reviewed quite hard and we will be better for that,” Holloway told reporters.
“(And) our work ethic … working harder off the ball, there’s opportunities we didn’t capitalise on out there.”
Competition in the squad
Holloway claims that competition is fierce in the Wallabies camp as everyone in the squad wants to run out for Australia, and this lifts performance as the players know they need to be on top of their game to earn a spot in the matchday 23.
“Everyone in this squad wants to represent their country and wear that gold jersey on the weekend,” he said.
“The competition within the squad is really driving us to be better.
“The best thing about it … guys are disappointed when the team is announced, but they all park that, it’s all about focusing on making that 23 better on gameday.
“There aren’t egos here, once that decision is made everyone’s focusing on getting better … definitely the competition and the return of guys is really driving that amongst our group.”
It is all to play for in the Rugby Championship, with only five points separating leaders Argentina and basement dwellers the Springboks in what has been a unique and enthralling competition in 2022.
