Autumn Nations Series: Owen Farrell to captain England against Argentina as Manu Tuilagi returns

Posted on September 13, 2024

Bruising runner Manu Tuilagi makes his return to the England line-up after being named at outside centre for the clash against Argentina on Sunday.

Owen Farrell starts alongside Tuilagi in the midfield and will captain the side, while vice-captain Jack Nowell starts on the right wing with Joe Cokanasiga and Freddie Steward in the back three.

Star fly-half Marcus Smith links up with Ben Youngs in the half-back pairing.

Elsewhere, Alex Coles makes his Test debut in the second-row in a paring with Jonny Hill, while vice-captain Ellis Genge, Luke Cowan-Dickie and Kyle Sinckler are the starting front-row.

Changed back-row

Maro Itoje finds himself on the flank alongside Tom Curry and number eight Billy Vunipola in the back-row.

David Ribbans may also make his debut if used from the bench, while Mako Vunipola, Joe Heyes, Sam Simmonds and Jack Willis make up the remaining forward options in a 6/2 split.

Scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet and Henry Slade are the backline options for head coach Eddie Jones.

Jones is looking forward to a tough Test against Argentina but is happy with the team’s preparation during the week.

“It’s been a really good week of preparation and I’ve been very pleased with the squad’s attitude,” he said.

“They’ve shown real work ethic and a determination to improve and our leaders, Owen, Ellis and Jack have really lifted the team.

Great game at HQ

“We’re looking forward to a great game of rugby at a full Twickenham Stadium against a very good Argentina side. It’s been a tough time for rugby lately and we hope that these autumn games show just what a special game it is.”
