Football legend Gianluigi Buffon has officially been confirmed as a Paris Saint-Germain player on a free transfer following his departure from Italian champions Juventus.
The 40-year-old ended his near 20-year stay at the Old Lady, where he racked up 656 times and won multiple trophies including nine Scudetti, and will now join the Ligue 1 champions for one season.
“I know what dreams PSG and it’s fans have in their hearts. I am going to bring all my energy, all my experience and all of my thirst to win to help my new club achieve all the great objectives it has set out for the future,” said Buffon.
“For the first time in my career, I am leaving my country and only a project this ambitious could have encouraged me to make such a decision.”
After winning his seventh consecutive Serie A title with Juventus this past season when they narrowly pipped Napoli to the top, Buffon will now look to replicate his domestic success with Juve to PSG and maybe even the Champions League, a competition that both player and club are desperate to win.
“The immensity of his career, as well as his ambitious personality, unifying and elegant, make him one of the most admired and respected players in world football,” said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
“His arrival reaffirms our will to always go higher, an ambition that we intend to pursue with a determination just as strong.”
