PLAYER RATINGS | Rennes 4-1 Lyon, a devastating Rennes display destroys Lyon

Posted on January 8, 2024

RENNES – 4 (Laborde 45, Traoré 51, Truffert 76, 83)

Alfred Gomis, 5

Hamari Traoré, 7 – Rarely troubled amid an unplayable forward line display but did well to follow up to slam home the second just after half time and his cross set up the fourth.

Warmed Omari, 6

Nayef Aguerd, 5

Birger Meling, 6

Baptiste Santamaria, 6

Benjamin Bourigeaud, 8 – His deliveries were typically on point and one such corner assisted the opener for Laborde and was also Majer’s right hand man in moving the ball sharply and smartly around the box.

Flavien Tait, 7

Lovro Majer, 9 – Nonchalantly, ran the game. Dropped into pockets around the area and in the channels, beat men for fun, picked clever passes for forwards and instigated some slippery interplay. It was his looped pass that created the second, he initiated the counter for 3-0 and started the move for the fourth.

Gaëtan Laborde, 7 – Rennes’ cutting edge once more. After all the fluid link up play of the first half it was his typical number nine’s header that opened the scoring as part of a dangerous display throughout

Martin Terrier, 6 – His interplay and movement was difficult to stop but he really should have scored twice, Lopes making an early save from his close range effort and he somehow had a shot blocked on the line with Lopes out of the picture.

Others: Sulemana 5, Truffert 8, Ugochukwu 5, Assignon 5.

LYON – 1 (Paquetá 92)

Anthony Lopes, 9 – It could have been a cricket score were it not for a raft of stunning stops from the OL keeper. A close range save from Terrier early on and a snap stop from Laborde with his foot where first half highlights before a flying change of direction to halt a Bourigeaud header after half time topped the lot.

Léo Dubois, 3 – Similarly outplayed by Rennes’ fluid forward line as the rest of the defence and was outpaced by Truffert from the third but made a superb goal line block from Terrier in the first half.

Jérôme Boateng, 3

Jason Denayer, 2 – Lost Laborde for the opener and lumbered through the game generally, looks tired.

Emerson Palmieri, 2 – Had no counter to Bourigeaud and Majer attacking down his flank, often outnumbered and helpless.

Thiago Mendes, 2 – Outplayed and outmanoeuvred by Rennes’ midfield and routinely lost the ball far too easily. His inclusion was designed to add security in midfield but he was badly exposed.

Maxence Caqueret, 3

Bruno Guimarães, 4 – Outplayed in midfield and subbed at half time but did make a super goal line block from Laborde.

Houssem Aouar, 2 – Completely anonymous. It was easy to forget he was on the pitch at all.

Karl Toko Ekambi, 3

Lucas Paquetá, 3

Others: Slimani 3, Cherki 5
