PLAYER RATINGS | Montpellier 2-4 Rennes, another compelling team display wins Rennes a thriller

Posted on November 24, 2023

Ligue 1 21/22, Round 26 – 25/2/22

MONTPELLIER – 2 (Oyongo 19, Wahi 41)

Jonas Omlin, 4

Arnaud Souquet, 4

Matheus Thuler, 3 – He looked to be lacking in sharpness after a lengthy spell warming the bench and was outmaneuvered by Terrier in conceding the penalty while being party to some slack defending for the Rennes opener.

Nicolas Cozza, 4

Ambroise Oyongo, 5 – He was embarrassed for the second by Traore’s pace but made up for it with a well-controlled volley for Montpellier’s first.

Jordan Ferri, 6

Joris Chotard, 5

Florent Mollet, 5

Téji Savanier, 5 – He was typically prominent in the game and much of Montpellier’s better play went through him but, although his cross eventually assisted MHSC’s first, his passing was far from on point and he struggled to create as he’s capable of.

Valère Germain, 4

Elye Wahi, 6 – Somehow managed to loop in an outrageous bicycle kick for 2-2 just before halftime

Others: Sambia 5, Leroy 5, Makouana 5, Delaye 5.

RENNES – 4 (Terrier 8, Bourigeaud 15, Laborde 52, Majer 84)

Alfred Gomis, 5

Hamari Traoré, 7 – He might have tracked Oyongo more tightly for 1-2 but he was a menace in attack. It was his wonderfully shaped cross that assisted the opener for Terrier and it was his bulldozing charge that left Oyongo standing before a clever reverse cross found Bourigeaud for 2-0.

Warmed Omari, 4

Nayef Aguerd, 6 – He made by far the most defensive actions in the game with 15 which included one superb late sliding block on a dangerous Souquet shot in the first half.

Birger Meling, 5

Jonas Martin, 5

Baptiste Santamaria, 6

Benjamin Bourigeaud, 7 – His passing was sharp and precise throughout and it was he who arrived late to neatly round off the second before a deft return ball put Majer in for Rennes’ fourth.

Lovro Majer, 7 – He’s actually had far better games this season but still did enough for a 7 here thanks to his low-key dominance of midfield and helping to create three of the four Rennes goals, calmly slotting home for 4-2 himself.

Martin Terrier, 7 – His free header opened the scoring before a lightning dribble won the penalty for 3-2. He played with swagger and vision throughout and was a constant threat for Montpellier as he drifted across the front line. His consistently high level deserves much more attention than it gets. Close to 8.

Gaëtan Laborde, 6

Others: Truffer 5, Guirassy 5, Doku 5.
