According to Fabrice Hawkins, Rennes’ teenage striker Mathys Tel (17) has successfully completed his medical with Bayern Munich today and all that remains is the announcement of his move to the Bundesliga side, where he will reportedly sign a 5-year contract.
The 17-year-old will wear the number 39 for the German giants, who will ultimately part with €28.5m, despite reports from Foot Mercato that the sum could reach up to €40m. As a result, his transfer fee will not quite match that of Eduardo Camavinga (19), who garnered a €32m total last summer for his move to Real Madrid. The €28.5m fee is however a record for a French player of Tel’s age.
The teenager took to social media last night to address his departure from the Breton side, writing: “I wanted to write to you tonight to announce my departure from Rennes. It was an immense source of pride and a real honour to have worn and represented this shirt since I was 12 years old. I want to show great respect and address a big thank you to Stade Rennais, who have taught me so much, who have made me grow in every aspect, and to whom I will always be very thankful.”
