Lyon could be set to carry on their tradition of hiring club legends to take up backroom roles, with Le Progrès reporting that former striker Sonny Anderson is being targeted as a potential new football advisor,
The role was previously occupied by ex-striker Bernard Lacombe and then by Gérard Houllier, the former manager having passed away in 2020. Club president Jean-Michel Aulas has explained, in an interview with Le Monde last month, that the former Liverpool manager’s absence was both a personal and professional loss.
Anderson, who is currently a pundit for beIN Sports and majority shareholder of Lyon-based lower league side La Duchère, is seen as a potential replacement. The Brazilian, who also played at Monaco and Barcelona, scored 94 goals in four seasons with Les Gones between 1999 and 2003, winning two titles along the way.
The 52-year-old is reportedly close to sealing a comeback, with the final details to be ironed out today, although sources at Lyon indicate that Anderson is one among a number of candidates, and that nothing will be decided this way.
