The Russian Premier League side have signed the defender from Schalke after injuries blighted his season in Italy <\/p>\n

World Cup winner Benedikt Howedes has agreed a four-year contract with Russian champions\u00a0Lokomotiv Moscow, ending his long association with Schalke.<\/p>\n

The Germany international started all of his country’s matches\u00a0as Joachim Low’s men triumphed in Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.<\/p>\n

But the 30-year-old has been dogged by a series of injuries in recent years\u00a0and was only able to make three Serie A appearances while on loan at Juventus for the 2017-18 season.<\/p>\n

However, Lokomotiv said stringent medical tests conducted in Italy did not reveal\u00a0any issues that would\u00a0prevent Howedes from joining the club.<\/p>\n

Howedes spent 16 years at Schalke, progressing\u00a0through the club\u00a0to become\u00a0first-team\u00a0captain. He played in\u00a0240 Bundesliga games and was a member of the side\u00a0who won the\u00a0DFB-Pokal in 2011.<\/p>\n

“Last summer, Benedikt looked for a new challenge at Juventus,” said Schalke’s sporting director Christian Heidel.<\/p>\n
