Facebook has joined a growing list of companies asking for Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) to return their campaign contributions.<\/p>\n
The social media platform requested a refund on its $2,500 donation, a spokesperson confirmed\u00a0on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe recent public comments made by Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith do not reflect the values or mission of Facebook,\u201d a Facebook spokesperson told The Hill. \u201cOur PAC contribution was made before these comments were made, and we have asked the Hyde-Smith campaign to return our campaign donation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Facebook joins Google, AT&T, Walmart, Boston Scientific, Major League Baseball and others in asking the Senate\u00a0incumbent\u00a0to return donations following her controversial comments referencing a \u201cpublic hanging.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hyde-Smith, who was tapped to replace retired GOP Sen. Thad CochranWilliam (Thad) Thad CochranEspy wins Mississippi Senate Democratic primary Bottom Line Mike Espy announces Mississippi Senate bid MORE, was videotaped earlier this month saying that she would be in the \u201cfront row\u201d if invited to a \u201cpublic hanging\u201d by a supporter.<\/p>\n
The comments sparked backlash given the state\u2019s history of lynching.<\/p>\n
She has apologized for the comment and said it was meant as a joke.<\/p>\n
