Putters<\/a><\/p>\n“As a woman, as an African American, as a millennial \u2014 and in certainly as someone who generally … believes in solutions and not just rhetoric \u2014 I think I’m going to be the candidate that can do the job,” she said told The Texas Tribune, adding that the party\u2019s nominee must persuade\u00a0Texans to vote Democratic but also \u201cgalvanize our base.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Edwards has been considering a Senate bid since at least March and is finishing her first term as an at-large City Council member. She said she does not intend to run for a second term in November.<\/p>\n
She told the Tribune she hopes to raise $5 million to help stand out in the primary race and that \u201cpotentially you’re looking at several million dollars\u201d for a general election she said will be nationalized.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think with the general, however, this will be a national phenomenon because people will recognize Texas is such a key piece\u201d to changing the direction of the country, she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think they’re very, very excited to see Texas flip and they’re going to spend resources,\u201d she added, referring to national Democrats.<\/p>\n

“We look forward to seeing which two liberals make the inevitable runoff,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n
The incumbent senator’s\u00a0most serious Democratic challenger so far is MJ Hegar, a 2018 House candidate and retired Air Force helicopter pilot. She launched her bid in late April and raised over $1 million through the second quarter of 2019.<\/p>\n
Chris Bell, a former Houston congressman and 2006 gubernatorial nominee, Michael Cooper, the 2018 lieutenant governor candidate, activist Sema Hernandez and 2018 gubernatorial candidate Adrian Ocegueda have also announced Senate bids.<\/p>\n
“I think what’s important in this election cycle is how people connect with you and what are you going to do to make their lives different,” Edwards told the Tribune when asked how she would stand out among so many candidates. “I think if someone can hear an answer to that question … I think that’s going to be the person [who] can carry the day.”<\/p>\n
The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election handicapper, rates the Senate race as “Solid Republican.”<\/p>\n
