The face of US Congress is set to change dramatically after America sent its most diverse group of candidates yet to Washington.<\/p>\n

Record numbers of women\u00a0and ethnic minorities ran for office in 2018, paving the way for a number of historic landmarks on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

The first Native American and Muslim congresswomen are heading\u00a0to the\u00a0House of Representatives, and Massachusetts has its first black congresswoman, while Arizona and Tennessee are getting their first female senators.<\/p>\n

Some of Tuesday’s black female pioneers, like Illinois Democrat Lauren Underwood, were first-time candidates. Others, like Massachusetts’ Ayanna Pressley, were political veterans. Most were considered long shots.<\/p>\n
