A robust legal framework in a magical world is to help train India\u2019s lawyers, after a university in Calcutta announced plans to use the Harry\u00a0Potter\u00a0books to teach students about prejudice and jurisprudence.<\/p>\n
The National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) is offering a new course that encourages students to discuss legal aspects of the fictional universe weaved by JK Rowling – including institutional bias against house elves and muggles – that could be equated to real life, such as caste and workplace discrimination laws.<\/p>\n
The course, entitled \u2018An interface between Fantasy Fiction Literature and Law: Special focus on Rowling’s Potterverse\u2019, will be an non-compulsory course for students taking their law degrees.<\/p>\n
The module\u2019s tutor, Assistant Professor Shouvik Kumar Guha, said: "This course is meant to be more of an experiment. It will take both me and the students out of our comfort zones.<\/p>\n
"In law schools, people get a very specific set of subjects. The curriculum revolves around the hard letter of the law, case laws etc. Given the fact that this course lasts about five years, students also get bored," he told India Today TV.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by the NUJS: \u201cIn Potterverse for example, The Ministry of Magic uses its representatives to torture children for daring to tell the truth, and imprisons or even executes its citizens without the benefit of due process of law.<\/p>\n
\u201cFreedom of the press in Potterverse is curtailed, and the major newspaper \u2018The Daily Prophet\u2019 is used to spread propaganda.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n
Classes for the course are due to start this December. While this is the only current course debating wizarding laws, there was a similar programme at a Delhi University in 2012 that had to close due to its oversubscription.<\/p>\n
Rowling\u2019s series of novels about the boy wizard are immensely popular in India and have been translated into more than 30 regional languages.<\/p>\n
There are Harry\u00a0Potter\u00a0related courses at many universities including Yale in the US and Durham in the UK.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
