Far-Right interior minister Matteo Salvini has been criticised for failing to attend the annual celebration of Italy’s overthrow of fascism.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Salvini, who leads the anti-immigration League party, on Thursday became the first top-level politician to skip the Liberation Day ceremony that marks\u00a0the triumph of Italy\u2019s resistance against the Nazi occupation.<\/p>\n

Last year the League\u2019s leader appeared to cast himself as the inheritor of Benito\u00a0Mussolini\u2019s legacy, tweeting \u2018tanti nemici, tanti onore\u2019 (so many enemies, so much honour) on the former\u00a0dictator’s birthday after criticism of his xenophobic speeches. Il Duce coined the phrase, \u2018molti nemici, molti onore\u2019.<\/p>\n

Mr Salvini, 46, chose instead to visit the Sicilian city of Corleone, where he paid tribute to the anti-mafia police.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won’t be marching here or there, wearing red handkerchiefs \u2026\u201d Mr Salvini said, in a reference to the Communist party\u2019s presence at Liberation Day. \u201cI’m going to Corleone to support the police force in the heart of Sicily".<\/p>\n

Mr Salvini\u2019s unprecedented decision further strained the uneasy alliance between the League and anti-establishment Five Star Movement, who together form the coalition government.<\/p>\n

Five Star leader and deputy premier Luigi Di Maio slammed his rival party chief in a visit to a synagogue on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cApril 25 is a big national holiday that we all have to celebrate,\u201d |Mr Di Maio said.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, President Sergio Mattarella appealed against the re-writing of history on his usual visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Rome. He reminded all parties that the liberation from Nazi-Fascism was \u201cItaly\u2019s second Renaissance\u201d and a founding moment of the Italian Republic. \u00a0<\/p>\n

A columnist for centre-left newspaper La Repubblica, Ezio Mauro, wrote that Mr Salvini had \u201cdisqualified himself as a politician\u201d by pitting the fight against fascism against that versus the mafia – \u201cas if this were a contest rather than a double challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

The celebrations on Thursday were also marred by 60 Lazio fans hanging a banner that read \u201cHonour to Benito Mussolini\u201d before a Wednesday night match against AC Milan.<\/p>\n

The group sang fascist songs and performed the Nazi-Fascist salute near the city\u2019s central Piazza Loreto, the place where the defeated dictator\u2019s body was hung up in 1945.<\/p>\n

Mr Salvini condemned the incident as the work of a \u201cfew idiots\u201d but that was not enough to assuage critics who argue he is complacent towards extreme-right groups.<\/p>\n
