Four jailed Catalan politicians have been suspended as MPs in Spain\u2019s Congress as the country’s democracy continues to suffer jolts from an unlawful referendum on independence for Catalonia in 2017.<\/p>\n
The speaker of Congress, Meritxell Batet of the Socialist party, explained that Friday\u2019s decision to suspend the Catalan politicians was taken on legal advice because the four are in custody on accusations of rebellion, along with eight other pro-independence leaders also standing trial at Spain\u2019s supreme court.<\/p>\n
But the divisive nature of the Catalan issue among Spain\u2019s political forces led to accusations of skulduggery by right-of-centre opposition parties, who accused the ruling Socialists of having tried to avoid suspending the four MPs until after Sunday\u2019s European and Spanish local elections.<\/p>\n
The lawmakers, including former Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras, for whom prosecutors are seeking a 25 year sentence, were allowed out of prison to swear their oaths of office at Tuesday\u2019s opening of Congress. They promised to obey the Spanish constitution only \u201cout of a legal imperative\u201d, while also swearing loyalty to the Catalan people and what they consider a mandate to secede from Spain.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe speaker has been making a fool of herself. She was forced to take this decision because the supreme court and her legal advisers said so,\u201d said Jos\u00e9 Manuel Villegas, parliamentary spokesman for the liberal Ciudadanos party.\u00a0The Socialist government \u201chumiliate the Spanish people to keep the separatists happy\u201d, Mr Villegas added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The attitude of Mr Junqueras\u2019s ERC Catalan party was seen as likely to influence whether Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez could get majority backing to remain in power.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
With the MPs now suspended, the ERC can decide to replace them or leave the seats empty.\u00a0In the latter scenario, Mr S\u00e1nchez\u2019s ability to command a majority with Left-wing Podemos could become a little easier.<\/p>\n
Mr Junqueras is also standing in Sunday\u2019s election to the European Parliament, alongside\u00a0Carles Puigdemont, the former president of Catalonia, who is in self-imposed exile. If elected, however, Mr Puigdemont would need to return to Spain to sign the paperwork, where he would almost certainly be arrested.<\/p>\n
