\nLAUNCH GLOBAL DIAMOND LEAGUE OF 1 DAY MEETINGS <\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThe IAAF is delighted to announce a major new initiative with the creation of a
\nnew circuit of elite Athletics Meetings known as the \u0089\u00db\u00cfIAAF Diamond
\nLeague\u0089\u00db\u009d starting in 2010.
\n\u00a0
\nA replacement for the current \u00cc\u00c9F Golden League of 6 meetings \u0089\u00db\u00d2 the new
\nIAAF Diamond League will meet one of the strategic goals of the IAAF, which is
\nto enhance the worldwide appeal of athletics, by going outside Europe for the first time.
\n\u00a0
\nAt present, 12 meetings have signed contracts to join the Diamond League, with
\n3 others on standby, which means that there will be competitions in Asia,
\nEurope, the Middle East and the USA.
\nThe final composition of the league will be confirmed at the end of the 2009
\nseason.
\n\u00a0
\nAmongst the other innovations of this new league is that athletes from 32
\ndifferent athletics events can take part, thanks to careful distribution of the
\nevents amongst the different meetings. Starting in 2010, the IAAF Diamond
\nLeague will offer more athletes, more earning opportunities. All 32 disciplines
\nwill have the same prize money with each meeting giving out $US 416,000. The
\nbiggest stars of the sport will be engaged with centralised contracts to ensure
\nthat the best athletes take part.
\n\u00a0
\nIn each of the 32 events there will be an \u0089\u00db\u00cfIAAF Diamond Race\u0089\u00db\u009d with
\npoints available throughout the season. The athlete with the most points at the
\nend of the series will be awarded a 4 carat diamond (worth approximately $US
\n80,000)
\n\u00a0
\nThe IAAF Diamond League will play a key role in supporting the IAAF World
\nAthletics Series of championships, as well as athletics at the Olympic Games,
\nby building up interest in athletics in the period leading up to and
\nimmediately afterwards the main event.
\n\u00a0
\nThe international TV rights for the IAAF Diamond League will be marketed by
\nIMG.
\n\u00a0
\nIAAF President Lamine Diack welcomed the creation of the Diamond League:
\n\u0089\u00db\u00cfI am delighted that the IAAF, in close association with the meeting
\ndirectors, has come up with a new professional circuit which will offer an
\neasily understandable series of meetings to provide world class entertainment
\nand also offer the maximum number of competition opportunities for a maximum
\nnumber of athletes in different events. Thanks to the support of the meetings,
\nwe will be able to offer top class events that are based on solid financial
\nfoundations, provide the best organisational capability and serve to promote
\nand develop the sport of athletics.\u0089\u00db\u009d
