2014 Boston Marathon\u00ae Will Mean $175.8 Million\u00a0For Greater Boston Economy<\/font><\/strong><\/div>\n

BOSTON, April 14, 2014 – The 118th Boston Marathon\u00ae on Monday,
\nApril 21, 2014, and surrounding Marathon-related events including the
\nJohn Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo and the B.A.A. 5K, will bring an
\nestimated $175.8 million (USD) in spending impact to
\nthe Greater Boston region, the highest-ever Boston Marathon spending
\nimpact, according to Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau
\n(GBCVB) President and CEO, Patrick Moscaritolo. Held annually on
\nPatriots\u0089\u00db\u00aa Day, the Boston Marathon is the world\u0089\u00db\u00aas oldest
\nannual marathon and ranks as one of the world\u0089\u00db\u00aas most prestigious road
\nracing events. The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has managed and
\norganized the Boston Marathon since the event\u0089\u00db\u00aas inception in 1897.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
This year, there will be more than 35,660 official participants in
\nthe Boston Marathon, including more than 5,330 participants from more
\nthan 70 countries outside the United States. More spectators than ever
\nbefore will line the 26.2-mile course on Patriots\u0089\u00db\u00aa
\nDay to view the Marathon. In addition, more than 1,800 members of the
\nmedia from more than 300 outlets will cover the Boston Marathon,
\nproviding the Greater Boston region with unparalleled international
\nexposure. \u00a0<\/div>\n

\u0089\u00db\u00cfThe spending impact of the 118th Boston Marathon provides a huge
\neconomic benefit for our visitor industry and it kick starts our spring
\ntourism season,\u0089\u00db\u009d said Moscaritolo.\u00a0<\/div>\n

\u0089\u00db\u00cfThe 2014 Boston Marathon will be a special event for all of the
\npeople of Greater Boston and our sport as a whole,\u0089\u00db\u009d said B.A.A.
\nExecutive Director Tom Grilk. \u0089\u00db\u00cfThe B.A.A. welcomes participants and
\nspectators from around the world who will patronize Greater
\nBoston\u0089\u00db\u00aas shops, restaurants, hotels, and local businesses. This year,
\nwe will all come together to stand as one in celebration of the
\nresilience of Greater Boston.\u0089\u00db\u009d\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
The Centennial Boston Marathon in 1996, which generated $172
\nmillion (USD), previously held the highest spending impact in Boston
\nMarathon history. The 1996 Boston Marathon had a starting field of
\n38,708, which stood for more than seven years as the largest
\nin the history of the sport.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
The estimated $175.8 million (USD) in spending impact will be generated from the following categories:<\/div>\n
Total spending by 35,660 participants and their guests: \u00a0$103.7 million (USD)<\/div>\n
Charity fundraising by Marathon participants: \u00a0$27.5 million (USD)<\/div>\n
Total spending by spectators: \u00a0$20.0 million (USD)<\/div>\n
Total sponsor and media-related spending: \u00a0$14.0 million (USD)<\/div>\n
Total spending by the Boston Athletic Association: \u00a0$10.6 million (USD)<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
TOTAL $175.8 million (USD)<\/div>\n

For the 29th consecutive year, the principal sponsor of the Boston
\nMarathon will be John Hancock Financial Services. John Hancock provided
\nthe first-ever prize purse for the Boston Marathon in 1986 and has
\nprovided nearly $16 million (USD) in prize money
\nfor the event. This year\u0089\u00db\u00aas prize purse totals $806,000 (USD), plus
\nbonuses.\u00a0<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
The John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo will be located at the
\nJohn B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center at 900 Boylston Street
\nfrom Friday, April 18 through Sunday, April 20. This Expo is widely
\nregarded as the running industry\u0089\u00db\u00aas premier expo for
\nnew products and services and will feature more than 200 exhibitors and
\nattract more than 100,000 attendees in 2014. Boston Marathon
\nparticipants must claim their bib numbers for this year\u0089\u00db\u00aas race at the
\nExpo.\u00a0<\/div>\n

Also among 2014 Marathon-related events is the B.A.A. 5K on
\nSaturday, April 19, two days prior to the Boston Marathon. This year\u0089\u00db\u00aas
\nB.A.A. 5K has an event record field size limit of 10,000 entrants. The
\n3.1-mile course starts and finishes at historic Boston
\nCommon and takes participants across the Boston Marathon finish line.
\nMore than 600 participants from outside of the United States will
\nparticipate in the event.\u00a0<\/div>\n
