{"id":4107,"date":"2020-02-25T13:28:45","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T13:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sportsnewsforyou.com\/?p=4107"},"modified":"2020-02-25T13:28:45","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T13:28:45","slug":"far-left-meps-want-canete-to-resign-over-possible-tax-evasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/googmn.com\/?p=4107","title":{"rendered":"Far-left MEPs want Ca\u00f1ete to resign over possible tax evasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"art\"><figcaption>\n<p>Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Ca\u00f1ete | Julien Warnand\/EPA<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<header>\n<h1>Far-left MEPs want Ca\u00f1ete to resign over possible tax evasion<\/h1>\n<p class=\"subhead\">The commissioner is being investigated for possible tax evasion, according to Spanish media.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<footer class=\"meta\">\n<p>\n\t\t\tBy\t\t\t<span class=\"byline\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"vcard\">Saim Saeed<\/span> <span>and<\/span> <span class=\"vcard\">Cynthia Kroet<\/span>\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"timestamp\"><time datetime=\"2017-06-02T16:47:33+00:00\">6\/2\/17, 4:47 PM CET<\/time><\/p>\n<p class=\"updated\">Updated <time datetime=\"2017-06-02T17:29:54+00:00\">6\/2\/17, 5:29 PM CET<\/time><\/p>\n<\/footer>\n<p>The European Parliament&#8217;s Green United Europeans\/Nordic Green Left group Friday\u00a0called for the resignation of Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Ca\u00f1ete, following reports that he is under investigation by the EU&#8217;s anti-fraud watchdog OLAF.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish news agency Europa Press\u00a0Wednesday reported that Ca\u00f1ete is being investigated for possible tax evasion.\u00a0A source told the outlet that OLAF will verify whether\u00a0Ca\u00f1ete &#8220;declared everything that he had to declare&#8221; and whether he properly informed the European Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The media report said the anti-fraud watchdog will conclude its investigation before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCa\u00f1ete must be expelled from our EU institutions as part of the clean-up,&#8221; said Miguel Urb\u00e1n, a Spanish GUE\/NGL MEP, in a press release. &#8220;The investigation into him by OLAF is not only a stain on the EU, but it undermines the credibility of democracy itself because of his public office and his duty towards our citizens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>OLAF&#8217;s press office did not confirm the report, saying in an email to POLITICO that it had to &#8220;protect the confidentiality of any possible investigations and of possible ensuing judicial proceedings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Commission spokesperson said no comments on OLAF investigations can be given, since it&#8217;s an independent body.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the name of Ca\u00f1ete&#8217;s wife was linked to the Panama Papers scandal.
