TTIP, JEFTA, CEPA are DOA<\/h1>\n<p class=\"subhead\">Brussels wants to avoid &#8216;toxic&#8217; names that make trade deals unpalatable.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<footer class=\"meta\">\n<p>\n\t\t\tBy\t\t\t<span class=\"byline\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"vcard\">Hans von der Burchard<\/span>\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"timestamp\"><time datetime=\"2017-05-04T20:24:15+00:00\">5\/4\/17, 8:24 PM CET<\/time><\/p>\n<p class=\"updated\">Updated <time datetime=\"2017-05-06T05:58:07+00:00\">5\/6\/17, 5:58 AM CET<\/time><\/p>\n<\/footer>\n<p>Stop\u00a0TTIP, JEFTA and CEPA.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission is changing its approach to trade deals after strong headwinds\u00a0jeopardized agreements with the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0lack\u00a0of\u00a0transparency was one of the culprits behind the collapse of a\u00a0Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement with Canada was salvaged only after the Commission sweated to get\u00a0regional parliaments on board.<\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s linguistic limbo the Commission wants to keep at bay:\u00a0Trade\u00a0negotiators, the Commission says, need to avoid toxic acronyms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Stop\u00a0CETA&#8221; and &#8220;Stop\u00a0TTIP&#8221; campaigns organized by NGOs\u00a0mobilized\u00a0more than 100,000 people last year at\u00a0rallies\u00a0across seven major German cities. Stickers appeared on lampposts across the Continent, and in London and Brussels, campaigners\u00a0altered\u00a0traffic lights\u00a0to spell out their campaign message.<\/p>\n<p>Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker&#8217;s top aide Martin Selmayr this week acknowledged these abbreviations have no future.\u00a0\u201cPresident Juncker is an opponent of abbreviations, me personally too, and if you start a debate with such an abbreviation you have probably already lost,\u201d he told POLITICO&#8217;s Morgen Europa event in Brussels on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Should the EU re-engage in trade talks with Washington \u2014 something Selmayr said he hopes will happen \u00a0\u2014 \u201cthen it certainly won&#8217;t be called TTIP,\u201d the powerful chief of staff\u00a0suggested.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-frag-list layout-linear article-in-this-section\">\n<li><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstr\u00f6m made a similar reflection during last year&#8217;s crisis in\u00a0which the Union\u00a0nearly failed to ratify\u00a0the EU-Canada agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should have never called it CETA. Just EU-Canada trade agreement, nothing else,\u201d Malmstr\u00f6m said. Acronyms have become \u201cquite toxic\u201d since\u00a0trade-skeptic NGOs and campaigners seized on them to spur fears about trade deals, the commissioner said.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission is stuck with CETA: The agreement with Canada has already been signed and is being ratified at the national level.<\/p>\n<h3>Learning its lesson<\/h3>\n<p>Brussels is already putting the new philosophy into action. The trade department&#8217;s website on Indonesia shows that the Commission cautiously scrapped all references to the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, or CEPA, under negotiation with the country. The pithy acronym has been replaced by\u00a0the &#8220;Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Indonesia.&#8221; Only permanent\u00a0records such as\u00a0photos in an\u00a0External Action Service gallery reveal that CEPA used to be the acronym.<\/p>\n<p>While the Commission uses the acronym ISDS to describe an investor-state arbitration system that it wants to abolish in trade agreements, it is careful to spell out its new alternative approach: the Investment Court System.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is definitely important to avoid using those abbreviations,\u201d said Juri Schn\u00f6ller, co-founder of Cosmonauts &amp; Kings, a Berlin-based startup for political communication and campaigning.<\/p>\n<p>However, while the Commission has made a conscious effort to stop using acronyms, trade-critical NGOs have constructed their own to keep their campaigns rolling. Several groups\u00a0refer\u00a0to the EU-Japan trade agreement as JEFTA \u2014 an abbreviation that,\u00a0they say, stands for the EU-Japan Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have never used that acronym,\u201d a Commission official said.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa Crysmann, media offer at the Brussels-based NGO Corporate Europe Observatory, said JEFTA was\u00a0chosen after people began using it to tweet about the Japan deal, and it trended on\u00a0the social network. \u201cWhen you need to restrict yourself to 140 characters, JEFTA is much more useful than EU-Japan agreement,\u201d Crysmann said.<\/p>\n<p>Schn\u00f6ller said acronyms aren&#8217;t the only\u00a0problem.<\/p>\n<p>Click Here: <a href='https:\/\/www.hoostyle.com\/lamp-shades\/habitat-tord-boontjes-garland-light-shade-flower-lamp-pendant-chandelier-black-htbglb' title='habitat tord boontje'>habitat tord boontje<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just coming up with a different name won&#8217;t solve the problem of skepticism toward trade agreements.
